Cucina Andare @ The Link, Glorietta

CUCINA ANDARE is part of the Mecato Centrale Group in which we know as a food market that is now all over the metro. It has been the birthplace of many fast growing food retailers such as Manang's Chicken, Mochiko, Merry Moo, Mio Gelati, Zen Taclings and many more! Now, to continue on bringing great food, music and art, Cucina Andare has found a new home at Glorietta, Makati - The Link!

We can now bond and hangout with our family, friends and co-workers at the roof deck of Glorietta's The Link Car Park while enjoying our food. The Link building is beside Makati Shangri-La and just in-front of the Landmark Department Store. As what I stated previously, the new place of Cucina Andare is at the roof deck of the building and therefore a grand view of Makati Skyline awaits to all foodies out there who'll visit the place.

How to get there?
Take a MRT ride going to Ayala Station. Then from Ayala Station, you'll have to walk until you reach The Link car park building. You'll be passing through SM Makati, Glorietta 4 and Hard Rock Cafe. The Link is surrounded by Greenbelt, Landmark and Makati Shangri-La. As you reach The Link building, take the elevator going to the 7th Flr. Then after that, take the stair going to the rooftop.

As we were taking the stairs to the rooftop, we already heard party music playing and by that, we knew it will be a one fun night for all of us. And it really was. Because as we step in and reach the venue, we all went WOW because the site is a great place to spent our Friday night. There were food stalls, music played by live bands, refreshing air, and more! It was like a celebration of great food with music and even art. As there are also stalls which sell drawings, paintings and toys.

Scene at the roof deck!

During the launch, Cucina Andare/Mercato Centrale Group also tagged along people from "Radio Republic" (an online music channel/magazine). They brought musicians and bands to entertain diners/foodies consisted of Inky de Dios, The Slinks, Steady Machine and lastly and definitely not the least, Kjwan. They also invited the creative group of "Vinyl on Vinyl" which highlights pop culture artists ranging from contemporary art, to underground, to street art.

Which one should we order?
I don't know what do they call this kind of art but its nice and really eye catching

That book grab my attention - The 3rd World Traveler. It costs me 300 PhP

Aside from that, there' also an UNO Magazine press con that day and an autograph signing with the lovely Ms. Dawn Jimenez. She's the cover girl of UNO Magazine for the month of March and I believe she's a perfect choice for their summer edition!

Going back, choosing what food to eat has been a challenged for us. There were wide varieties of food available on the venue and what made it more complicated was, it all look good.

Though their specialty is Lechon Kawali hence we bought Sugpo from them

The cheese on their Nachos is overloaded! Try it out!

College days! I miss this one :)

For the sweet tooth!

Baby Back Ribs at 120 PhP!
Who wants to try this out? Anyone?

I know... they all look good and tasty!

My colleague and I stayed at the Cucina Andare for more than 3 hours. We just talked about life, work, travel, blogging, and more while we enjoy our food. Though we were in the middle of Makati City and eating outside, we had a very cozy and relaxing dinner. We were just chilling and just feeling the breeze of the air.

Group shot with my hair on fire! Hahaha

Modern Filipino Cuisine at Sentro 1771

A few days ago, I received a message on my Facebook wall from Sir Anton, author of pusangkalye.net, inviting me to join them in a food event hosted by Sentro 1771. So who am I to say no? This is a great opportunity plus another write up for me, so right away I said yes without any hesitation (and it was clearly a clever choice).

Sentro 1771 is part of the 1771 Group of Restaurants. The group includes Cafe 1771, Winebar 1771 and Sidebar which is located in El Pueblo Real de Manila Ortigas and Chateau 1771 situated in Greenbelt 5. If you're wondering what's the significance of 1771, well, it is a street number where the first restaurant of this group originated. Going back, Sentro 1771 is known for serving local Filipino cuisine but reinvented them and added a twist of Swiss and French style. Have you heard/tasted Adobo sa Gata? How about Lamb Calderata? Hmmm how about Corned Beef Sinigang? These are just some of the best sellers in Sentro 1771. It's unusual and creative but I assure you great satisfaction. Especially those who are fond of Filipino dishes. By the way, Sentro 1771 is located at Serendra, BGC, Taguig and also in Greenbelt 3.

The Sentro 1771 that I visited was their Serendra branch. I was a bit late so when I came in, most of the bloggers where already there but luckily, the food haven't served yet. While waiting, I've got to know lifestyle, food and travel bloggers which were also invited by Sir Anton. I've got to meet:

Sir Edgar and Sir Ramil of pinasmuna.com  |  Doc Gelo of docgelo.com  |  Blogger couple  Ms Marjorie (livingmarjorney.com) and Sir Jonel (gadgetgambit.com)  |  Sir John of kumagcow.com  |  Ms Stacy of tsinoyfoodies.com  |  and Ms Edel

I had fun chatting with these bloggers. Hearing their stories and opinions on the world of blogging amused me. Adding to this nice chat is the laid-back interiors of Sentro 1771. They have a stylish fixtures, paintings and nice decorations hanged on the wall and importantly, (well, for me) the restaurant is well lighted. A perfect venue for family bonding, class reunions and even dine out with colleagues.

Then after some time and without knowing, the food started to serve on our table and they all look delicious and presented very well. They served us from appetizers, to their main meals, down to their desserts - in short, it was a complete meal.

Duck Pancakes (170 Pesos)
The first dish presented to us is Duck Pancakes and served in 4 pcs per order. Peking pancakes filled with strips of native duck slow-cooked in beer, rhum vinegar, soy sauce and muscovado sugar.

Scoop it or wrap it up!

Macau Chorizo and Cheese Tidbits (240 Pesos)
Serving is good for 2. Macau Chorizo and Cheese Tidbits is a mini spring rolls filled with Macau chorizo, shallots and keso de bola.

That's a customized newspaper for Sentro 1771

Lamb Caldereta (480 Pesos)
Boneless lamb shoulder stewed with carrots, bell peppers, tomato sauce and spices. You can also request if you want it to be served in mild or spicy.

Chicken Adobo sa Gata (250 Pesos)
Serving is good for 2. Chicken Adobo that retains the vinegar-garlic peppercorn balance but thickened with coconut milk.

Camote Cups (240 Pesos)
Carved sweet potato filled with stir-fried cabbage, Baguio beans and carrots. Served in 4 pcs per order.

(Upper left) Lamb Caldereta | (Lower left) Chicken Adobo sa Gata | (Right) Camote Cups

Seafood Bagoong Rice (530 Pesos)
Good for 2-3 persons per serving. Rice topped with grilled squid, garlic shrimp, and hito flakes. You can request for brown rice or red rice. Just add 45 pesos.

Specialty of the House: Sinigang na Corned Beef (595 Pesos)
Of all the food that were served to us, this is my favorite one and really a must try! Now I know why this dish earned so much positive feedback among food bloggers and foodies. This is an unbelievable recipe. Good for 2-3 persons per serving. This dish is comprised of corned beef short plate and boneless beef shanks in tamarind broth with native vegetables. How does it sounds to you?

And before serving, diner has an option to choose the level of sourness of this dish. A great idea to get the satisfaction of customer since all of us has different standard of what Sinigang should taste like in terms of its sourness and tartness. Genius!

A must try! Should not be missed when visiting Sentro 1771

Banana Tart (150 Pesos)
Puff pastry with a light custard topped with caramelized saba banana slices.

Yum!!!

Fried Suman and Mangoes (180 Pesos)
Rolled out suman fried to a light crisp and topped with ripe mangoes and served with sweet coco jam.

Kakanin with mango on top? Try it people!

Keso Flan (220 Pesos)
A baked but light, no crust cheesecake served with queso de bola and red egg (itlog na pula). Their recipe says: "Parang Bibingka na hindi!" The suggested way to eat this is to have a sliced of cheesecake on top with a small piece of queso de bola and "itlog na pula".

Please excuse photos in this blog post. I only used my camera phone for this entry. I'm still saving up for that lens. Aw.

Overall, it was a great event and food trip. Sentro 1771 did a great job on balancing Filipino taste along with Swiss-French style. They give a modern twist to Filipino's all time favorite dishes. Visit them to witness it for yourself and don't forget to bring along your friends, families and colleagues. Kainan na!

Special thanks to Sir Anton of pusangkalye.net for inviting me to this food event.

"Ihaw-Ihawan" at Larsian of Fuente Osmeña, Cebu

After our fun and tiring adventure in Cebu, we also need to charge up and eat up. So we visited the grilling haven of the city which is located at Fuente Osmeña , Capitol Site near Chong Hua Hopsiptal called the Larsian BBQ.

Larsian is a popular place in Cebu because of its grilled foods. Larsian can be compared to Banchetto of Manila however it serves mostly grilled/barbecued dishes. A variety that ranges from poultry meats down to seafood meats. I didn't google for photos about Larsian therefore I am really clueless of what does it looks like. So I was surprised to see that it was not a single restaurant but it was a big place comprise of many stalls but selling the same type of food. Yes, all the stalls in Larsian are selling the same type of food (well, that is just base on my observation) and this is by far the largest barbecue center that I have ever been.

Some of the things you can choose from =]

Our group felt like a movie star as we entered the place. Mob of barbecue vendors and stall owners welcomed and invited us to try their stalls. That is a normal scene every time a customer/group visits the place. So just feel the scene. They may scream at you but they're not mad at you, it is just their way to win over their competitors.

We were overwhelmed at first and barely couldn't decide where to dine because there are so many stalls to choose from and the food really do look fresh and delicious. So here's a tip, gather all the vendors and bargain with them. Yes, that's right. Ask them what they can offer to you as a freebie if you'll eat on their place. This technique is very effective if you're in a large group like ours because vendors will do anything to have you in their respective stall.

And the stall that win our hearts is stall number 21, the Alindasay. We actually got unlimited "sabaw" or soup  and 2 liters of sodas for free with that technique. The crew is even nice and gave us discounts to our orders despite the freebies they've already offered to the group.

This will be a good chorizo!
Foods of all the stalls are grilled in one area of Larsian. It is located at the center of the place and be visited by the customers to check out their order(s). The place is a pretty loud but you wouldn't mind it as the food is serve right in front of you. By the way, the only way to eat things here is using your hands or "naka-kamay" but you can still keep your hands clean by putting plastic gloves that will be distributed before you eat. Don't worry because it's free of charge. Tip: Alindasay have a delicious sauce that is a perfect match for their grilled foods. Ask a pitcher of it to put on your table. Enjoy eating!

The very interesting rice of Larsian called "puso"
Puso is a popular icon in Cebu like their lechon and dried mangoes. Puso is a steamed rice wrapped in a weaved coconut leaves. It is often seen in places like Larsian and street stalls of Cebu. Its construction makes it accessible to eat while walking or standing and also without the use of spoon, fork and plate. Convenient right?

Look at those saucy chorizo and chicken
Tasty "balunbalunan" and "isaw"
Pusit with veggies
We were all full and happy. Aside from the delicious food, our bill is reasonable and cheap. It was clearly a great experience and people should visit the place whenever they are in Cebu.

Meet the Larsian warriors
Breakdown of Expense:
Total Bill - 1280 pesos (shared by 11 full person)

  • Isaw (chicken intestine) - 5 pesos
  • Liempo - 350 pesos (4 pieces, discounted)
  • Squid - 70 pesos
  • Chicken skin - 5 pesos
  • Pork barbecue -
  • Puso (rice) - 3 pesos
  • Chorizo (my favorite) - 13 pesos
  • Balunbalunan (chicken gizzard) - 5 pesos
Now, Imagine our dinning table billed in thousand and having those cheap price tags!

After the war... hahaha

Ratings based on my experience [0-5, 5 is the highest] :
Taste: 5 - grilled foods here are really juicy and saucy!
Environment: 2 - people who are meticulous in place will not like dinning here
Service: 5 - happy crew and great service
Price: 5 - super reasonable indeed!
